Department of Microbiology
The department of Microbiology is concerned with teaching the second year MBBS students the morphology and microscopic structures of various microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses and host defence mechanisms. The in-depth study of the characteristics of pathogens, their modes of transmission, mechanisms of infection and growthas well as various techniques of their laboratory diagnosis will help the MBBS student’sprevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.Other tasks may include the identification of potential health risks to the community or monitoring the evolution of potentially virulent or resistant strains of microbes, educating the community and assisting in the design of health practices. They may also assist in preventing or controlling epidemics and outbreaks of disease. It not only teaches about diagnosing and treating disease, but also involves the study of beneficial microbes.
